At Taylee's 3 day appointment the doctor noticed a heart murmur. He decided we should see a cardiologist in Spokane the next day to check it out. So on Wednesday Dax and I took Taylee on her first road trip at 5 days old. She had an echocardiogram done first, which is basically an ultrasound of the heart. It took 30 minutes, but she was a champ through the whole thing. Then we sat in the waiting room until it was time to do the EKG, which just measures the rhythm of the heart and only took about a minute once all of the sticky pads were on her little body.
It turns out that Taylee has a small hole in her heart, called Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). This causes a small amount of blood to go from her left ventricle back into her right ventricle and circle through the lungs again instead of being pumped out into her body. The really good news is that the hole is very small and we don't need to do anything about it. It won't get any bigger and her heart will grow. Most cases of VSD close by the time a child is 6 years old, and for those that don't close it doesn't usually cause any problems. She can still play sports. :)
It was a long day, but we were thankful that Taylee got the hang of nursing from the moment she was born and that she is such a content baby. It could have been much more stressful than it was, and we are thankful that she is healthy.
